Erb's Palsy

Chicago Birth Injury Attorneys: Brain Injuries and Erb's Palsy

Too often injuries, including brain damage, can result from the trauma of a difficult birth. The use of forceps and vacuum extractors has saved many children when they are used properly. But when they are used improperly, they can cause massive facial and brain injuries.

Erb's palsy is another type of birth-related injury that babies can suffer when labor and delivery aren’t performed properly. Erb’s palsy is an injury to the brachial plexus, a group of nerves in the neck and shoulder. Frequently the result of excessive traction, pulling on the baby during delivery, this birth injury can result in limp or paralyzed arms, as well as lack of muscle control in the arm and hand. As children who have suffered brachial plexus injuries grow older and develop, they may develop deformities, and often require ongoing, lifelong care for their injuries. As children grow, these other complications may appear and need attention.

If your child has suffered a brain injury or Erb's palsy due to a medical professional's negligent actions during childbirth, you have the right to pursue justice - the full, fair and complete compensation you deserve. The attorneys at the Law Offices of Lane & Lane, LLC can help.

Causes of Erb's Palsy

Erb's palsy is often caused by shoulder dystocia. During the birth process, the shoulder becomes stuck against the mother's pubic bone. Attempts to deliver the baby vaginally can stretch or tear the brachial plexus nerves. Recent studies have shown that almost all permanent brachial plexus injuries were cause by excessive traction at birth.

Other Nerve Injuries During Childbirth

Erb's palsy is just one of several conditions that occur when the nerves that connect the arm and spinal cord are damaged. Others include:

  • Klumpke's palsy (a lower trunk injury)
  • Brachial plexus palsy
  • Erb-Duchenne palsy
  • Horner's syndrome (which includes damage to facial nerves)
