About Spinal Cord Injuries

Chicago Injury Lawyers: Spinal Cord Trauma

Spinal cord injuries change lives. Every year 11,000 people in the U.S. suffer a spinal cord injury. They join an estimated 230,000 Americans who are living with the effects of spinal cord trauma.

Frequently a permanent disability, a spinal cord injury can cause:

  • Loss of sensation below the point of the injury
  • Loss of motor function
  • Weakness or inability to move parts of the body
  • Low blood pressure
  • Inability to control the temperature of the body
  • Inability to control the bowel and bladder
  • Chronic pain

The amount of feeling or movement a person retains after a spinal cord injury depends on the injury site and on whether it was a complete or incomplete injury. People with incomplete injuries may retain some feeling or ability to move the affected areas of the body.

Types of Spinal Cord Injuries

If the trauma to the spine occurred at the middle of the back or below, the injured person may lose the ability to move the lower parts of the body. This is called paraplegia. The chest, stomach, hips, legs and feet are affected.

Tetraplegia occurs when the injury to the spinal cord occurs in the cervical (neck) region. Tetraplegia causes loss of movement and feeling in the head, neck, shoulder, arms and upper chest in addition to the lower part of the body.
