large settlement for a young man abused by a former priest

Attorney Mark A. Brown successfully reached a settlement of between $1.68 and $2.1 million with the Chicago Archdiocese on behalf of our client, 24-year-old “John Doe.” The Archdiocese had at least eight attorneys rigorously defending against the case, which was set to go to trial in September 2014. In spite of this legal firepower, attorney Mark A. Brown was able to secure a considerable settlement for our client.

Victimized by a Sexual Predator

Former Archdiocese priest Daniel McCormack sexually abused our client while he was a fifth grade student at Our Lady of the Westside School during the 2001–2002 school year. McCormack, who pleaded guilty in 2007 to molesting five other students, has already served prison time for his past sexual misconduct. However, he remains in state custody because he is still considered a potential danger to others.

A Chance to Heal

Our client suffered tremendous hardship as a result of his abuse. Difficulties in school, along with behavioral struggles, eventually caused him to drop out of school through most of his teenage years. His quality of relationships diminished, and he struggled to find or maintain employment. His settlement award will allow him to seek out the educational training he needs. In addition, the money will allow him to obtain the physical, mental, and emotional support he needs—through therapy and other assistive means—to heal from his victimization. He will finally have the financial stability that he’s been unable to attain throughout his life so far.

At Lane & Lane, our relationship with our clients doesn’t end after a decision has been made. This client is now a part of the Lane & Lane family, and we consider it an honor and privilege to have represented him.
